The Story
Built in the 1930s and operated until the 1960s, Carter's still is the last turpentine still in the state of Georgia to be both functional and located in its orginal spot. The still ran for thirty years and was importan source of jobs to the residents of Portal, Georgia.

In the early 1980s, the still was handed over to the Portal Heritage Society so it could be used to educate the public on the importance of the turpentine industry to Georiga's history.
